Droupadi Murmu on Monday Takes Oath as 15th President of India

Droupadi Murmu is the first President of the country who was born in Independent India. She is the 64-year-old youngest leader to become India's President.

Murmu got 6,76,803 votes against Sinha’s 3,80,177 votes. She is also the first tribal leader to be elected to the highest constitutional post of the country and the second woman to become the President.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers, MPs etc. were present at this ceremony.

Born in a Santali tribal family on June 30, 1958, Murmu completed her education from Bhubaneswar and went on to work first as a junior assistant in the State Irrigation and Power Department from 1979 to 1983.

In her address to the oath as the 15th President of India, Murmu said, "I have been elected during an important time when the country is marking 75 years of Independence"

She noted, "Reaching this office is not my personal achievement but that of all the poor people in the country"

“My election is proof of the fact that in India, the poor can dream and also fulfil those dreams,” Murmu said

She said, "It is the power of India’s democracy that a girl born in a poor tribal home could reach the topmost constitutional post," Murmu added.

Murmu devoted her life to serving the society, empowering the poor, downtrodden and marginalized sections of the society.
