BSNL To Launch Indigenous 4G Services Across India in August: State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is poised to launch 4G services nationwide in August 2024, leveraging entirely indigenous technology. This strategic move aligns with India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, aimed at fostering domestic capabilities and reducing reliance on foreign technologies.
Successful Pilot Tests and Achievements
BSNL has conducted successful pilot tests of its 4G services in the 700 MHz and 2,100 MHz spectrum bands, achieving impressive speeds of 40 – 45 Mbps. These tests were primarily conducted in Punjab, using technology developed by leading Indian entities such as TCS and a consortium led by the government-run telecom research body, C-DOT. As a result, approximately 800,000 subscribers have already been added to the region, showcasing the potential of indigenous technology.
Technology and Partnerships
The core technology for BSNL’s 4G network, developed by C-DOT and Indian telecom development, has demonstrated robust performance and stability ahead of schedule. This core network encompasses essential hardware, devices, and software facilitating critical telecommunications functions like call control, switching, and charging, among others.
BSNL has partnered with Indian companies such as TCS, Tejas Networks, and ITI, awarding significant orders valued at around ₹19,000 crores for setting up the 4G network. Notably, the network is designed to be easily upgradable to 5G, reflecting India’s forward-looking approach to technology adoption.
Network Deployment and Expansion Strategy
BSNL’s ambitious strategy includes the deployment of over 112,000 towers to support its 4G services and future 5G services across the country. Already, more than 9,000 towers have been installed in various states, including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (West), and Haryana. The rollout of 4G-capable SIM cards is underway, and existing customers with older SIM cards are required to upgrade to access the new services.
About C-DOT
The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) is a government-owned telecommunications indigenous technology development center established in 1984. Its primary objective is to develop cutting-edge telecommunication technology to meet the needs of India’s telecom network. C-DOT and Indian telecom development have played a pivotal role in pioneering rural telecommunication services and have developed technologies such as digital exchanges, rural automatic exchanges, and next-generation networks. It continues to modernize Indian telecom infrastructure, implementing high-speed broadband solutions, and advancing indigenous technology 4G/ 5G.
Conclusion
BSNL’s upcoming rollout of indigenous technology 4G services represents a significant milestone in India’s telecom sector. By harnessing homegrown technology and fostering partnerships with leading Indian companies, BSNL is not only enhancing its service offerings but also contributing to the nation’s self-reliance goals. With a robust deployment and expansion strategy in place, BSNL is poised to usher in a new era of connectivity, empowering millions of Indians with faster, more reliable telecommunications indigenous technology.
