In the world of healthcare, some special people do a big job but often don’t get much attention. These special people are called midwives. Every year on 5th May we celebrate International Day of the Midwife 2024 to thank them for all they do to help mothers and babies.

Importance of Midwife

International Day of the Midwife 2024 is a day when we thank midwives for their hard work. It’s also a day to tell people about the important work midwives do and to talk about the challenges they face.

The History Behind International Day of the Midwife

International Day of the Midwife started in 1991. That’s when a group called the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) first came up with the idea. Since then, it has been celebrated every year to say thank you to midwives all over the world. May 5th is the date because it’s the anniversary of when the ICM was founded.

The Role of Midwives in Maternity Care

Midwives are like baby experts. They help moms before, during, and after they have their babies. Here’s what they do:

  • Before the Baby Comes: Midwives help moms during pregnancy. They check on the mom and baby to make sure everything is okay. They also teach moms how to take care of themselves and their babies.
  • When the Baby is Born: Midwives are there when the baby is ready to be born. They help moms during labor and delivery. They give support and help with pain if the mom needs it. They make sure everything goes smoothly and the baby is born safely.
  • After the Baby is Born: Midwives keep helping after the baby is born. They teach moms how to feed and take care of their babies. They also make sure the mom is feeling okay after giving birth.
  • Teaching and Helping: Midwives teach moms and families about having babies and taking care of them. They also talk to people to make sure moms and babies get the best care possible.

Challenges Faced by Midwives

Even though midwives do such important work, they face a lot of challenges:

  • Not Enough Help: Sometimes, there aren’t enough midwives to help all the moms who need it. This means midwives have to work extra hard and can get tired.
  • Not Enough Resources: In some places, midwives don’t have everything they need to help moms and babies. This can make their job harder.
  • Not Enough Respect: Even though midwives are very important, some people don’t recognize how much they do. They deserve more respect for the important work they do.
  • Not Enough Training: Some places don’t have good training programs for midwives. This means there aren’t enough midwives who know how to help moms and babies.

Celebrating International Day of the Midwife

On International Day of the Midwife, we say a big thank you to all the midwives around the world. We celebrate them for their hard work and for helping so many moms and babies. We also promise to keep working to make sure midwives have everything they need to keep doing their important job. With their help, we can make sure that every mom and baby gets the best care possible.
