Madras High Court Civil Judge Exam Pattern 2024

Preliminary Examination (OMR Method)

The preliminary examination will consist of one paper containing 100 multiple-choice objective-type questions based on the syllabus given below. The papers will be set in English only, each question shall carry one mark and a 0.10 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer

Main Written Examination (Descriptive Method):

The Main Written Examination shall be held on two consecutive days in the Forenoon and Afternoon sessions. There shall be four descriptive-type question papers. Each paper shall be of three hours duration and shall carry 100 Marks each. On the first day, the examination shall be for Translation Papers & Law Paper – I, and on the 2nd day, the Examination shall be for Law Paper II & Law Paper III, as mentioned below:

Preliminary Examination:

PART – A

  • The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908
  • The Negotiable Instruments Act, of 1881
  • The Transfer of Property Act, 1882
  • The Indian Contract Act, of 1872
  • The Specific Relief Act, of 1963
  • The Constitution of India and
  • The Puducherry Buildings (Lease and Rent Control) Act, 1969.

PART – B

  • The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973
  • The Indian Penal Code, 1860
  • The Indian Evidence Act, of 1872
  • The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act and
  • The Criminal Minor Acts (including the Information Technology Act, 2000; and the
  • Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012).

PART – C

  • General Knowledge (Degree standard),
  • Test of Reasoning and Mental ability (S.S.L.C. standard).

Main Written Examination:

(i) Translation Paper: There will be one translation paper and the candidates will be required to translate passages from (a) English into Tamil or Malayalam or Telugu and likewise, the passages in (b) Tamil or Malayalam or Telugu into English at their option. The passages will be from (i) Depositions, (ii) Judgments, (iii) Documents, (iv) Pleadings, and/ or (v) Orders.

(ii) Law Paper – I:

(a) The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908;

(b)The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973;

(c) The Indian Evidence Act, 1872;

(d) Principles of Pleading and The Constitution of India (as Amended)

(iii) Law Paper – II:

Framing of Issues and Writing of Judgments in Civil Cases.

(iv) Law Paper – III:

Framing of charges and Writing of Judgments in Criminal Cases
