Odisha Garima Scheme For Sanitation Worker: The Odisha government started a new scheme called Odisha Garima scheme for the welfare of core sanitation workers. On 11th September 2020, the chief minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik implemented the Odisha Garima scheme. Almost 20,000 sanitation workers and their families of a total 1,00,000 population will get benefits from this scheme. This Odisha Garima Yojana mainly concentrates on the dignity and safety of workers.
A Corpus fund of Rs.50 crore will also be created. In the whole Odisha state, all 114 urban local bodies will have the Garima Scheme. With this scheme, the state commission for core sanitation workers is also initiated. The main goal of this scheme is to avoid the accidents that are happening to the workers due to manual scavenging.

Odisha Garima Scheme Objectives
Under the Odisha Garima Scheme, the government is identifying the core sanitation workers through the statewide survey and register them, order the registration of service providers of sanitation and give them the required machines and suitable PPEs for their safety.

The Scheme- GARIMA, regulates core sanitation services and ensures the mandatory provision of personal protective equipment and safety devices, includes compensation for accident or injury, EPF, ESI, Family pension, and disability support. It also introduces a special wage category for sanitation workers, risk & hardship allowance provides health & life insurance, free education for children up to post-graduation, and provides 90% of subsidies for housing and two-wheelers. An initial corpus fund of Rs. 50 cr has been created to implement GARIMA. The scheme envisages the creation of a State Commission for Core Sanitation Workers. Through this historic and CT revolutionary initiative, Odisha sets a pioneering example in India to bring lasting happiness to 1 lakh Core Sanitation Workers & their families.
