Indian Forest Service Preliminary Exam Pattern
The General Studies (Paper-I) test is the first paper of the preliminary examination. The Paper II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%. The questions will be of multiple-choice, objective type. And it is mandatory for the candidate to appear in both the Papers of Civil Services (Prelims) Examination for the purpose of evaluation. The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective type) is conducted for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination.

UPSC Prelims Syllabus – CSAT (Paper-II)
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills

- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X level).
Penalty For Wrong Answers
- There are four alternatives for the answers to every question. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as a penalty.
- If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happens to be correct and there will be the same penalty as above for that question.
- If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question.
UPSC IFS Mains Exam Pattern
The Main Examination will consist of a written examination and an interview test. The written examination will consist of 6 papers of conventional essay type in the subjects.
The written examination consists of the following papers:
- Paper I: General English – 300 Marks
- Paper II: General Knowledge – 300 Marks
- Papers III, IV, V, and VI – Any two subjects to be selected from the list of optional subjects. Each subject will have two papers – 200 marks for each paper.
Note: Answer scripts of only those candidates who have obtained the minimum marks, as decided by the Commission for Paper II (General Knowledge), will be evaluated.
UPSC Indian Forest Service Mains Syllabus
The standard of papers in General English and General Knowledge will be such as may be expected of a Science or Engineering graduate of an Indian University.
UPSC IFS Mains General English Syllabus – Paper 1
- Candidates will be required to write an essay in English. Other questions will be designed to test their understanding of English and workmanlike use of words. Passages will usually be set for summary or precis.
UPSC IFS Mains General Knowledge Syllabus – Paper 2
- General Knowledge includes knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject.
- The paper will also include questions on Indian Polity including the political system and the Constitution of India, the History of India, and the Geography of nature which the candidate should be able to answer without special study.
UPSC IFS Mains Optional Subjects
The total number of questions in the question papers of optional subjects will be eight. All questions will carry equal marks. Each paper will be divided into two parts, viz. Part A and Part B, each part containing four questions. Out of eight questions, five questions are to be attempted. One question in each part will be compulsory. Candidates will be required to answer three more questions out of the remaining six questions, taking at least one question from each Part. In this way, at least two questions will be attempted from each Part i.e. one compulsory question plus one more.
