In a remarkable achievement, a doctor hailing from Assam, aged 26, has secured the fifth rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2022, making him the highest-ranked male candidate nationwide.

Mayur Hazarika, a graduate of Ramanujan Junior College in Nagaon, affiliated with the Assam state board, successfully completed his 12th grade education. Following that, he pursued and successfully obtained his MBBS degree from Guwahati Medical College in 2020.

In his initial endeavor, Mayur attempted the civil service exams, with a strong aspiration to join the Indian Foreign Services. Although he had a longstanding interest in foreign affairs, Hazarika initially chose the medical field due to a lack of guidance on approaching the civil services.

“Then when I was in the third or fourth year of medical school, I started getting more interested in foreign diplomacy and international relations. So then I thought of attempting for the foreign services,” he said.

Despite having a long-standing fascination with foreign affairs, Hazarika initially opted for a career in the medical field due to a lack of proper guidance on pursuing the civil services.

However, during his third or fourth year of medical school, his interest in foreign diplomacy and international relations grew significantly. This newfound passion prompted him to contemplate attempting the foreign services examination, as he stated, "So then I thought of attempting for the foreign services."

During his preparations for the preliminary exams, Hazarika successfully fulfilled his responsibilities at a hospital in Nagaon district as part of his rural posting, as mandated by the National Health Mission. Due to limited time availability, he predominantly relied on self-study to make progress in his preparations.

After completing the preliminary exams, Hazarika was able to allocate more hours for studying. He efficiently utilized online resources, adapting to the distinct demands of each stage of the examination by accessing the necessary materials.
