World Press Freedom Index 2024 Announced | India Ranked 159th Out of 180 Countries

India’s position in the World Press Freedom Index indicates ongoing concerns about freedom of the press. Despite a slight improvement in rank, the challenges faced by journalists remain significant. The fact that India ranks lower than its neighboring countries underscores the need for continued efforts to safeguard press freedom and ensure journalists can work without fear or hindrance.

Overview of the Press Freedom Index

The Press Freedom Index assesses 180 countries on journalists’ freedom and independence to work and report. These rankings show the different levels of press freedom worldwide. In the Asia-Pacific region, which is the world’s second most challenging area for journalism, several countries, like Myanmar, China, North Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan, are among the most dangerous for media personnel.

Press Freedom in South Asia

The World Press Freedom Index 2024, released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), highlights the status of press freedom worldwide. India is ranked 159th in South Asia, with Pakistan slightly higher at 152, and Sri Lanka at 150. These rankings emphasize the difficulties journalists face in the region, where their ability to work and report independently is often limited.

Changing Dynamic in the Asia-Pacific Region

The Asia-Pacific region, known for its complexities, poses significant challenges for journalists. Myanmar, China, North Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan rank among the top ten most dangerous countries for media personnel, highlighting the risky environment journalists face. Interestingly, none of the region’s countries made it to the top 15 of the index this year, which is worrying for press freedom advocates.

Press Freedom in the Middle East and North Africa

In the Middle East and North Africa, concerns about press freedom remain high, with almost half of the countries facing “very serious” situations. Countries such as Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Syria are still dealing with challenges to journalistic freedom. The United Arab Emirates is now included in the list of countries in the red zone, indicating widespread issues across the region.

Europe’s Position and Challenges

On the other hand, Europe, especially within the European Union, includes countries where press freedom is seen as “good.” Nevertheless, challenges remain, with countries like Hungary, Malta, and Greece under scrutiny for their treatment of the media. The implementation of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) shows efforts to protect press freedom within the EU.

Global Patterns and Concerns

The World Press Freedom Index 2024 shows a troubling drop in the political indicator, one of five detailed indicators in the report. States and political entities are increasingly neglecting to uphold press freedom, resulting in hostile actions against journalists. The use of artificial intelligence, especially in disinformation campaigns, presents a major threat, with deepfakes being used to sway elections.

Struggle Against Nature and Peril for Journalists

Journalists who cover environmental stories also encounter substantial risks, with 44 journalists killed in the last 15 years while reporting on environmental issues. This highlights the dangers of reporting on crucial global topics and the importance of safeguarding journalists working in these areas.
